Active SHF Charters
An official Société Honoraire de Français charter makes a school's honor society active and allows students to
  • become official members
  • be eligible for contests & scholarships
  • wear official SHF regalia at graduation

SHF Charters remain active as long as

  • at least one student has been inducted in the last 2 years
  • the SHF sponsor maintains current AATF membership

Not sure if your school's SHF charter is active? Check the Active SHF Chapter Directory here
SHF Charters can be purchased or renewed HERE via the AATF online store

Induction Interest

  • The way to determine student interest in induction is up to the SHF Sponsor.
  • Some sponsors send around a list for students to sign up if they are interested, confirm the grade requirements are met, and issue an invitation for induction.
  • Some sponsors chose to have students fill out an application for SHF Induction. This can be done electronically or traditionally. Some applications must include letters of reference, short essays, etc.

SHF Meetings

  • Each SHF Charter can run as best suits the school and SHF Sponsor.
  • Some sponsors find they do not have time for an abundance of meetings because of other life commitments, and only meet with the SHF occasionally.
  • Other sponsors have monthly meetings for SHF members to attend.
  • There are no set meeting requirements outlined in the National SHF Constitution.

SHF Student Officers

  • Officers are not required for an SHF Charter to operate.
  • If you would like to have student SHF Officers, you are able to have elections or appoint student officers as you see fit.

If you wish to create your own local school-level SHF Constitution, you are encouraged to do so. Please note, local charter constitutions may exceed the requirements outlined in the National SHF Constitution, but not lower the requirements for SHF membership.

Current and former SHF sponsors have shared ideas on additional requirements for SHF Induction and continued membership that may be included in a local SHF Constitution, if desired.

Any SHF Charter without a local SHF Constitution will be subject to the requirements as outlined in the National SHF Constitution.

Sponsors may use the term "Société Honoraire de Français" on materials and are welcome to create their own design.
Suggested graphics include a fleur-de-lys, school mascot, or school logo.
We strongly discourage the use of the English equivalent, "French National Honor Society" since this name as well as "National Honor Society" are copyrighted by other associations.
