The mission of the Société Honoraire de Français shall be to stimulate interest in the study of the French language and francophone cultures, to promote high standards of scholarship, to reward scholastic achievements, and to foster an inclusive and supportive environment for all learners. We aim to create enthusiasm for and a deep understanding of the diverse francophone world, encourage cultural exchange, and promote national and international friendship and collaboration.

Starting a Société Honoraire de Français Charter at your school

SHF Basics 
The Société Honoraire de Français (SHF) is the honor society for French language learners at the high school level.
The local high school charter provides a vehicle to focus activities around French language and francophone literature and cultures, and to encourage participation in contest or scholarship opportunities.  
In addition, students can acquire leadership skills by serving as officers, directing the initiation ceremony, or leading other events.
The establishment of a charter of the Société Honoarie de Français offers the following benefits to a secondary French program.
  • Recognize outstanding scholarship in the study of French
  • Official SHF Seal placement on graduate diploma
  • Opportunity for tri-color honor cord or SHF stole to be worn at graduation
  • Official SHF regalia (drinkware, clothing, etc.) to honor accomplishments

Requirements for starting and maintaining a SHF Charter

  • SHF Sponsor must have current AATF membership
  • An active SHF Charter must be in place at the school
  • Student inductions must be done at least every two (2) years
