This robust unit was created by a member of the 2025 Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad in Côte d'Ivoire team.
This download contains a 13-lesson unit about cacao/chocolate and la Cote d'Ivoire, which is intended for students in levels 3,4,5. The unit contains reading and listening activities, including interviews with native Ivoiriens and videos made during a visit to a cacao plantation.
The unit's essential questions are:
- How is the production and consumption of chocolate an issue of social justice ?
- What are the socioeconomic and environmental issues with cacao bean production in Côte d’Ivoire ?
- How did chocolate come to be the indulgence it is today in the Western world ?
- What role does chocolate play in American society ?
- What are some efforts that are currently happening, and what can be done in the future to improve the cacao bean industry for farmers of the Côte d’Ivoire ?
