This robust unit was created by members of the 2025 Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad in Côte d'Ivoire team.

This unit is destined for Intermediate High/Advanced Low learners is based on the essential question: How do the stories we tell about ourselves and others shape our identities? 

The unit objectives and goals are that students will be able to:

  • Define and provide examples of the following terms:  un récit, un discours dominant, un contre-récit 

  • Identify national symbols in Côte d’Ivoire, compare them to U.S. national symbols and explain their relationship to cultural values. 

  • Investigate the interplay of ethnic and national identity in Ivorian society.

  • Discuss the influence of language on identity among Ivorians.

  • Interpret traditional and contemporary literary adaptations of La Reine Pokou, a foundational myth of the Baoulé people in Côte d’Ivoire.

  • Identify dominant discourses and counternarratives
