Position:
Instructor of French and English as a Second Language

Date: Commencing September, 2008

Responsibilities
The instructor will teach three to four sections of French, ranging from beginning to advanced, and one or two sections of English as a Second Language (ESL), depending on enrollment and class registration.  Strong consideration will be given to candidates who have the ability and experience to teach additional languages.

World languages are offered as college-preparatory electives open to students in all grade levels according to their previous language experience.  ESL classes are required of non-native English speakers and also include students in grades 9-12.  Interlochen’s class week is Tuesday through Saturday, with Thursday used as a flexible day to offer classes of varying length, individual instruction, and school and department meetings. Academic instructors also provide a two-hour evening tutorial one evening per week. All faculty are expected to work with the students outside of their teaching responsibilities, compensating for parental absence and assisting the residence hall staff in the development of students' total experience at Interlochen.  Faculty are also called upon by graduating seniors to write letters of recommendation for college admissions.

The study of world languages involves the student in the communication patterns of other cultures with an emphasis on accurate communication, both oral and written.  All languages are taught exclusively in the target language, and all communication between the teacher and students takes place in the target language, including grammatical explanations and cultural topics.  Advanced classes also require the teaching of authentic literature and in-depth studies of French-speaking cultures.

The English as a Second Language Department offers a curriculum structured to meet the needs of those international students with limited English proficiency. Courses are designed so that students develop reading, speaking, writing and listening skills that allow them to function successfully in the United States.

Qualifications: Applicants must be qualified to teach high-school French and must have or be eligible to acquire a Michigan teaching certificate. Master’s degree and recent experience are strongly preferred. Ability and experience teaching other languages is a plus.  Experience and training in ESL instruction also strongly preferred.  Proficiency with technology, experience with integrated or interdisciplinary teaching, and a background or interests in the arts are valuable assets in the ideal candidate.

Salary: Competitive compensation and benefits package.

Application: Send letter of introduction (including philosophy of language instruction), resume, transcripts, three references with addresses and phone numbers and/or current letters of recommendation, and any other appropriate supportive material to:

Subject: Help Rebuild New Orleans through Education

teachNOLA

Rebuilding our city by teaching our children

The facts:

Students growing up in low-income communities are 7 times less likely to attend college than students growing up in middle and high-income communities.[i]

Between kindergarten and high school graduation, the average public school student will spend 187 days more than one full school year with substitute teachers.[ii]

Teachers have the biggest impact on student achievement.[iii]

The Program:

teachNOLA, in partnership with New Schools for New Orleans and the Recovery School District, is seeking the nation's most outstanding certified teachers to make a difference by teaching in public schools in New Orleans starting in the fall of 2008. This highly-selective initiative recruits talented individuals to drive the city's rebirth by boosting academic achievement for all students.

The goal of teachNOLA is to ensure that New Orleans' students are prepared for post-secondary education and to compete in today's global economy. We need teachers who care about bridging the achievement gap, who will give our children the education they deserve, and who desire to make a difference in students' lives and in our community. This is where you can truly make a difference.

New Orleans, more than any other city in the nation, has an opportunity to transform urban education and serve as a national model for reform. To succeed in this endeavor, however, our city needs a critical mass of high-quality educators who want to use their skills to give back to their community.

Certified teachers are encouraged to apply. While we are looking for outstanding candidates for all subjects and grade levels, we are particularly interested in candidates to teach science, math, special education, early childhood education, French, and Spanish.

As a teachNOLA teacher, you will use your experience, knowledge, and record of achievement to improve the lives of the city's neediest students. You will also become part of a powerful network of education leaders working to build a model for urban education reform.

Candidates benefit from a quick, streamlined, and personalized application and selection process as well as placement assistance to seamlessly connect them with more than 60 of the city's highest-need charter and district schools.

The task of rebuilding our city and our schools is monumental, and it will not be easy. We are calling on you to take up this challenge to improve academic outcomes for all of our children.

Apply online today and forward this information to your contacts and potential candidates, referring them to our website, www.teachnola.org.

Be your own force of nature. Become a teacher in New Orleans.

Position of school director

The French-American School of Chicago (EFAC) is looking for a director starting with the 2008-09 school-year.

The school is a small program within two Chicago Public schools (about 1/2 mile from each other), with 80 students from Kindergarten to 12th grade.  Students, who must be French speakers, follow the regular curriculum and alongside the EFAC program which is accredited with the French ministry of education for K-5 and linked to the Cned (French distance-learning center) for 6-12.

The staff includes four full-time teachers and one kindergarten assistant.  EFAC is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization under the laws of the state of Illinois, and is managed by an elected board of parents.

The school's mission is to give its students a bilingual education and make them able to pursue their studies in either language.  The director's tasks are many: coordination with the American authorities of Chicago Public Schools and the French authorities of the consulate and ministry of education, communication with the families, supervision of the teachers, administrative management of registration and activities, design and implementation of the school plan, presence on both campuses.  But the small size of the program only requires a part-time director's position.

Requirements include perfect fluency in French and a minimum of 3 years of teaching experience in a school setting (K through 12). Candidates must display flexibility, a diplomatic touch, efficiency and authority; good organization and communication, technological savvy as well as a progressive and collaborative approach to education.  Preference will be given to those candidates that demonstrate a thorough understanding of the French and American school systems with the ability to navigate and work within each system.
